Our Story

Stone Bicycle Coalition was founded in 2025 with a simple idea: everyone should have access to reliable, affordable transportation and the knowledge to maintain it.

What started as a passion project has grown into a mission to create an open-source bicycle cooperative model that any community can replicate. We believe that by documenting everything we learn and sharing it freely, we can help communities everywhere establish their own bike co-ops.

Based in Rapid City, South Dakota, we serve the Black Hills region with bicycle repair education, earn-a-bike programs, and community cycling resources.

What is a Bicycle Cooperative?

🛠

Tools & Workspace

Members have access to professional tools and workspace to repair and build their own bicycles.

🎓

Education

Learn bicycle repair skills through classes, workshops, and hands-on experience with knowledgeable volunteers.

💰

Affordable Parts

Access to donated and low-cost parts sourced from community donations and partnerships.

🤝

Community Owned

True cooperatives are owned and operated by their members, creating shared investment in success.

🌱

Open Source Mission

We believe the best way to spread bicycle cooperatives is to share everything we learn. That's why we're developing an Open Source Bike Co-op Toolkit - a comprehensive set of templates, guides, and resources that any community can adapt to start their own bike co-op.

What We're Sharing

  • Legal formation guides for different organizational structures
  • Sample bylaws and operating agreements
  • Earn-a-bike program curriculum
  • Shop setup and tool lists
  • Volunteer management systems
  • Safety curriculum
  • Grant writing templates
  • And much more...

All documentation is released under Creative Commons licensing, allowing free use and adaptation with attribution.
